Thought I would start this thread, and post what I know can be done with VAG-COM in terms of altering things.... I do like to play lol..

Anyway, bear in mind that any info I post here will have been done using the latest version of VAG-COM and a Genuine OEM lead, equipped with the dongle, so if any of you are using a non genuine lead, you may not have the full functionality of the s/w unless you have paid to register it.

Anyone else who is more familiar with this please post what you know, as I am still learning lol :)

Right here we go...

First thing I did was to fit cruise control, and diagnose a faulty glow plug in my aux heater. I won't repeat the details here as I hae posted about them elsewhere in the oforum.

Today, however, I have turned on the trip computer function on my Zetec!

All you have to do is "recode" the instrument cluster (17) from 01421 to 13421 I have yet to fit the stalk/switch, but now my display gives me the 3 lines instead of the previous 2, although at the moment the trip is showing instantaneous mpg, and I can't change it until I fit the switch, which will be next week hopefully.

During my recent fun and games with the alternator I noticed that when the battery was reconnected, on the first turn of the ignition switch the traction control light came on. I didn't come on again so I presume it was part of the ECU relearning its parameters, i.e. looking for the traction control and finding it wasn't fitted and not bothering again. Or do I have a TC and it's not working ? Perhaps it's something else you can enable ?

IIRC Andrew, if you look at the braking module (03) If you have std brakes, it's listed as " Component: ABS 20 IE CAN 0001" and if you have traction it's " Component: ESP 20 CAN V005 " as you can see in the differences between my modules and those of Mr T in this post HERE

Does anyone have a Gal (or other) that has auto locking on it, ie when you either start the engine, or get over 6mph it locks the doors?? Really miss this function, as have to keep remembering to lock the doors - If anyone does, and they have VAG-COM, any chance of a screenshot of the controller with the type and s/w coding?

Your tailgate already does this when you turn the ignition on, so some of the technology must be there. I presume you would need an inertia switch or something similar to unlock in event of an accident ?
Posted

Andrew, the tailgate is slightly different, in that it doesn't actually lock, just a relay opens to prevent the electrically operated tailgate release from opening with the handle for the set time period - I think 30 secs after you turn off the ign.

If you open the drivers door you can open the tailgate any time.

So GSMguy to get trip computer working on a Zetec, it's the relatively low cost of the stalk and getting someone to recode the instrument cluster, How easy was fitting the stalk? because this is one i'd be interested in doing. Who's got a vagcom in or around the birmingham area who's willing to help for a small finacial consideration.

Nelse, fitting the stalk is a 1/2 hour job. Mechanically, all you have to do is remove the wheel and column shroud. Electrically you will need to run 3 wires from the new switch to the rear of the cluster - so that has to come out - another easy job, just 2 screws. I used 4 core alarm cable - the crimp on pins are actually already in the connectors! One other lead to earth and away you go!!

Oh yep, need it recodeing in VAG-COM too.

I have been having a play with Vag com and I have some more questions.

How do I get live data from Vag Scope.Does the engine need to be switched on or just up to normal running temperatue? How do you save this data and does it just store each individual trip i.e from turning on the engine to stopping it ?

OBD-11? What can we find here ?? I found mainly emmissions info but nothing much more !!!

And remember guys keep your answers "simple" (easy !!!) I am new to this Vag com malarky and am ever so cautious as i am scared I might F**k something up !!LOL

I have had a go at recoding the instrument cluster on my 2000 Gal and it wont accept the code 13421. My original code is 00421 and it will accept 01421 with no obvious difference.

GSMGuy - I notice your gal is younger than mine - do you know if they changed the cluster in the first few years hence mine wont accept that code.

Dissapointing as I was looking forward to adding the trip comp as I have already fitted the cruise!!

Any ideas??

Mike

It is a facelift model.

What is confusing is the original code is different from yours even tho they are both facelift zetecs.

Oh well - might not be able to have the trip after all :(

Do you have to remove the steering wheel to change either stalk.My trip computer stalk has a mind of its own........it will only take one command after the ignition has been switched on....switch it off and you can go onto the next one ????? Also I wouldnt mind fitting cruise control but I dont fancy messin with the "old air bag" (not talkin about er indoors neither!!!!!!}

Andy... The code will be different if yours is a manual - I what is your current code?

Paul, yep sorry m8, the 'bag has to come off to change either stalk - 5 min job though... Turn ign off before removal, and disconnect the battery - they after refit, turn ign on, and reconnect the battery - otherwise you will get an "airbag fault but it's easy enough to clear if you have the lead.... Oh, you do too lol!!!

just a quickie , when i did my airbag course at thatchams, we were always told disconect the battery and WAIT at least 30mins before touching any air bag component..... the module stores a charge and it has to power down. SAFETY FIRST.

I have had my gal for 4 months now, and the airbag has been off 4 times.... not had a problem by following the Airbag procedure in the TIS..

Mike,

I never noticed that yours was an auto!!

Mine is a manual and the current code is 00421.

Is it safe enough to adjust these and see what happens??

i.e. I assume your second 1 is for auto so if that is the case will 30421 work - will have to try it!!

Also Paul - ther is an earth wire that is the feed to the trip computer switch - it goeds to a bolt just to the right of the fusebox - maybe it's loose? If not, you can pull the back cover to the stalk off and clearly see the actual switch innards and operation - it's just a few springy metal strips that move when you push the buttons - nothing falls out lol..
